Horror in the Windy City RPG Setting for Whispers in the Dark

Created by Matt Corley

Horror in the Windy City brings the excitement, intrigue, and beautiful chaos of the time period to your table using the 5e rules you already know as adapted by the acclaimed Whispers in the Dark RPG. The beautifully illustrated 180+ page book is a fully realized campaign sourcebook covering Chicago in the latter half of the 19th century. There are new rules, backgrounds, a new alignment system, NPCs, scenarios, and more. In short, it’s everything you’ll need to take your party of investigators to Chicago. It will be up to them to find their way out. Extensive Worldbuilding. Horror in the Windy City is written to provide the GM with everything needed to play multiple campaigns in its borders. The major events, and the forces behind them, are explored with scenario hooks and evocative details for the GM present to their players. Chicago’s historic neighborhoods and locations: Englewood, Lake Forest, St Charles, The Cabbage Path, the Stockyards, Wrigley Field, Lake Michigan, and others are presented with scenario hooks, and NPCs of note. The Dreamlands' incursion into Chicago has had profound effects on the city. Particularly in areas of heightened emotions, tension, and violence. Find out what’s happened, and continues to happen, behind the veil of sleep. No story of Chicago is complete without an in-depth look at the public clubs, secret cabals, gangs, and gangsters running the city. From the public faces, to the puppeteers pulling the strings, dozens of new NPCs and organizations are detailed.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Print Coupons are heading out!
over 3 years ago – Thu, Nov 26, 2020 at 10:39:24 AM

POD Coupons are out!

Be on the lookout for coupon codes to allow you to print the book at cost. Each backer that backed at the level to get a POD will get two codes: a premium color hardcover and a softcover. Both look great and you may use both or either.

The codes will allow you to purchase either/both books at cost to print and then pay shipping. The codes do not expire, so you're in no rush and again you can get either one.

Don't forget to check your spam folders please and if you need anything just let me know!

Thanks!

Matt

It's Done!

PDFs have been sent. Please check you spam folders if you don't see it, and possibly give it until the end of the day.

The files have been sent via Backerkit for direct download and DriveThruRPG for download there and to keep a copy in their cloud. I would recommend downloading the DTRPG copy, because that is how I will distribute updates to the book (if there are any) and distribute the print-on-demand coupons when they're ready.

Print-on-demand is a bit of a process and mostly a waiting game on my side. I'll do everything I can to expedite but my hands are largely tied. I hope to be able to approve print files for you in November.

That's all I've got, thank you for the support and I hope you like the book as much I do!

Proofs are in the final stages.

Craig has been working tirelessly to get layout finished, and despite my best attempts to give him extra work is right on schedule for a Halloween release (maybe a few days early) of the PDF.

Other News

Blood & Brimstone cover by Francois Vaillaincourt

Blood & Brimstone e-books are on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited. Reviews and word of mouth are critical for indy press. Please let us know how you liked the book with a review, and if you have friends that may like it aim them to Amazon to check it. Blood & Brimstone is set in John F.D. Taff's Fearing Universe which I'll be exploring down the road with a Whispers RPG sourcebook.

The Devil's City (original painting) by Thomas Boatwright

The Devil's City, by Sara Tantlinger and myself, is also on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited and can be found HERE. We've only got one review on Amazon so any reviews are greatly appreciated!

Speaking of Whispers RPG. I've collected pdfs into a bundle at DriveThruRPG. They're discounted and if you've purchased any of the products within the bundle already, DTRPG will credit you for those previous purchses. The bundle can be found here and includes the products below.

As always your support is what keeps me going and I appreciate it so much.

Stay safe out there,

New Whispers RPG Broadsheet: Spring-Heeled Jack
over 3 years ago – Mon, Oct 19, 2020 at 06:23:19 AM

The newest Whispers RPG Broadsheet has just been released at DriveThruRPG for $1.49

Spring-Heeled Jack

Naughty children are told stories of a hopping devil that will spirit  them away for misdeeds, pranks, and shenanigans. If they aren’t good  little boys and girls this springing devil will find them, scare them  near to death, and if they are especially wicked take them away.

Spring-Heeled Jack, so named for their vaunted jumping ability, first  came to the attention of the public in the mid-1830s. Soon stories of  their troublemaking ways would spread throughout the British Isles and  beyond turning up in urban settings throughout the world.

Spring-Heeled Jack explores the legend of Jack, giving the GM everything they need to insert them into their Whispers in the Dark campaign:

  • The legend of Spring-Heeled Jack
  • Two Statblocks - Gentleman Jack and The Devil Jack
  • Handout for your players
  • Scenario Hooks
  • Using Spring-Heeled Jack in your campaign

For use with Whispers in the Dark, but with plenty of system agnostic details to be of use with any system set in a the Gaslight Era.

Horror in the Windy City News

All layout edits have been completed and Craig is in the final stages creating the PDF. Barring any unforeseen challenges I'll have it to you in the next two weeks (hopefully sooner). My process has always been to have the PDF out to backers for a few weeks prior to releasing the ordering printer proofs. With DTRPG timelines for proofs being what it is the date for those codes is a little hazy, but as always I'll do what I can to expedite.

Thank you the support!

Btw, the book will be a smidgen over 260 pages :)

Short Update
over 3 years ago – Mon, Oct 12, 2020 at 01:23:58 PM

Layout Nearly Done!

Craig is kicked butt and taking names with the layout. I just sent my comments on his first pass. At this point we just need to do the tweaks. The Oct 31st deadline is looking very, very good.

One (sort of ) surprise is the length. I originally envisioned it at ~160-175 pages and I think my last update was suggesting it'd be around 220. The layout I have in front of me is 266 pages! That will almost definitely change a little, but no matter where it lands this will be a hefty tome.

Thanks again,

Matt
