Horror in the Windy City RPG Setting for Whispers in the Dark

Created by Matt Corley

Horror in the Windy City brings the excitement, intrigue, and beautiful chaos of the time period to your table using the 5e rules you already know as adapted by the acclaimed Whispers in the Dark RPG. The beautifully illustrated 180+ page book is a fully realized campaign sourcebook covering Chicago in the latter half of the 19th century. There are new rules, backgrounds, a new alignment system, NPCs, scenarios, and more. In short, it’s everything you’ll need to take your party of investigators to Chicago. It will be up to them to find their way out. Extensive Worldbuilding. Horror in the Windy City is written to provide the GM with everything needed to play multiple campaigns in its borders. The major events, and the forces behind them, are explored with scenario hooks and evocative details for the GM present to their players. Chicago’s historic neighborhoods and locations: Englewood, Lake Forest, St Charles, The Cabbage Path, the Stockyards, Wrigley Field, Lake Michigan, and others are presented with scenario hooks, and NPCs of note. The Dreamlands' incursion into Chicago has had profound effects on the city. Particularly in areas of heightened emotions, tension, and violence. Find out what’s happened, and continues to happen, behind the veil of sleep. No story of Chicago is complete without an in-depth look at the public clubs, secret cabals, gangs, and gangsters running the city. From the public faces, to the puppeteers pulling the strings, dozens of new NPCs and organizations are detailed.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Description Error - Bookplates
almost 4 years ago – Sun, Jun 28, 2020 at 02:24:42 PM

It was brought to my attention a few days ago that I didn't remove references to a signed book plate from all of the book descriptions. Sara and I talked about doing this and due to logistics and costs decided against it a few weeks from launch. I missed mentions of the book plates in the following tiers:

  • Pledge $53 or more Complete Chicago Saga (Print, POD & PDF) **US Backers ONLY**
  • Pledge $65 or more The Whispers Catalog (Print, POD & PDF) **US Backers Only** tiers), and

The logistics and costs of printing, signing, and then shipping plates multiple times (to Sara, to me, and then to you) is something that SMS cannot afford at this time (which is why it was pulled from the campaign).

To (try to) make up for my error I'd like to offer the following to the backers of those tiers:

Please email me at the below address with how you'd prefer to proceed. I am so sorry for any confusion that my error made. If none of the above options are appropriate for you please email me directly and we'll work it out directly.

Thanks,

Matt

btw, I would be happy to sign any book at any time and if you ever see please don't hesitate to say hi.

People of Color in the 19th Century America by Dr. Robert Greene

Today's update has been taken from the Horror in the Windy RPG book. The section was written by Dr. Robert Greene II of Claflin University and I couldn't be happier to have him share his expertise on this subject. Dr. Greene has also offered the following regarding the use of Nancy Green's portrait by A.B. Frost:

The image used here of Nancy Green is one of the few remaining from her time as the spokesperson for Aunt Jemima pancake mix. In no way is the sharing of this image meant to be racist or discriminatory--it is, unfortunately, part of our history and one of the few images that remains of the real Nancy Green.

Please feel free to download, share, and use the document as you like. We ask that you not edit it in anyway.

Horror in the Windy City - Chapter 1

Horror in the Windy City Ch. 1

One thing before getting to the update. All proceeds from Saturday Morning Scenarios DriveThruRPG sales in the month of June will be donated directly to the NAACP LDF. #blacklivesmatter

Next, The Devil's City novellas for US backers is in Missouri, and should be delivered to me this week. The DTRPG proof for POD backers is also on the way. My sincere hope is for all The Devil's City backers to have either vouchers for POD, or books in the mail by this time next week.

Finally, I've used BackerKit to email all Horror in the Windy City backers today with a sample of Chapter 1: Timelines. Final edits have not been made and layout will likely change a bit too, but I wanted to you all to see what you're getting. If you're not a HitWC backer pre-orders are still open, and I'll be releasing the PDF at DTRPG next week.

I'll be releasing other chapters periodically, for review and/or playtesting, and welcome any feedback you may have may. I'll set up a google form for errata/playtesting feedback in the next few days.

Thank you and stay safe,

matt
